Where the Blackfoot natives lived
Blackfoot people lived in the northern plains in Montana, Idaho, and Alberta. They lived and traveled through these places regularly. They where also very independent and where ever there was food they moved to that place.
Climate
The climate was a high of 90deg. and low of 10deg. When it was cold the Blackfoot had to make warm clothes and when it was warm they had to make more clothes.
What they ate
Blackfoot people ate buffalo and many different plants and animals. As a way to kill the buffalo they were chased off of a cliff which is now known as the buffalo jump. They also ate squirrels ,nuts ,berries, steamed camas,moose, deer, mountain sheep, fish, duck, pumpkins, sunflowers, squash, and wild rice. Pemmican and Buffalo were their two staple foods.
What did the Blackfoot people wear?
The men wore head dresses which had many feathers on them. They also used bones for weapons, tools, and decorations. They used the animal hide for clothes and and making the tepees. The Blackfoot painted many symbols on their bodies and clothes the symbols meant many things for example if a man killed a buffalo he might paint a buffalo on his body. Moose skins where the best for moccasins and deer skins where the best for leggings and womens dresses.
What was the language the Blackfoot people spoke?
They spoke a musical language that had complicated verbs the words where usually very long and difficult for the English speakers to pronounce one of their many words was oki and it means "hello".
Religion and special ceremony's
Their ceremonies were sun dance it was preformed once a year in the summer it was similar to other ceremonies preformed in other plain cultures. A women played the leading role in this ceremony unlike other cultures. They moved there camp on four successful days. On the fifth day they transfered bundles of medicine to the medicine women and offered gifts by children and adults in ill health. On the sixth day they danced toward the sun blowing eagle bone whistles and self torture. On the remaining four days they preformed various ceremonies of the mens society.
Where their name came from
Blackfoot is an English translation of the work siksika . They call them selves this because of the dark colored moccasins they wore.
Who they interacted with
They interacted with the European travelers and other tribes along the way. They didn't fight over territory but instead they fought to prove their courage. They never fought to the death instead they count couped which means to touch an opponent in a battle with out harming him. The Blackfoot tribe fought a lot with each other but made peace easily.
How their leadership and government was organized
There was 4 Blackfoot bands, 3 in Canada and 1 in the U.S. In Canada they were considered first nation people and in the U.S they were Tribes. Each tribe or first nations lived on there own reserve which means it is legally under there control. Each tribe had its own government and was politically independent.
Arts and crafts
Some arts and crafts where making bone whistles and painting there clothes and body. The paint colours where naturally made of berries or minerals.
